Maybe you’re not sure what editing or writing support you need to get your content in the best possible shape for publication. That’s understandable.
Perhaps you’ve been given a draft to finalise but haven’t had time to look at it thoroughly before sending it on for editing. Or you’re at the early stages of a whole new publishing project and don’t know yet what extra help would be most useful.
You might need:
- Original content written from scratch, requiring desk research and interviews
- A shorter, simplified version of existing content, perhaps for a public summary or web page
- A complete restructure and rewrite, especially for draft documents like annual reports that pull together information from different sources but should flow well
- Developmental editing, focusing on elements such as structure, ease of navigation, tone and overall messages and themes, bearing in mind the intended use and audience
- Copyediting, checking the details, including facts (like names and abbreviations), references, grammar, spelling and punctuation, as well as for consistent style, readability, clarity and accessibility
- Proofreading, doing the final pre-publication checks to correct errors or inconsistencies in spelling, grammar, punctuation and layout, including headings, page numbers, tables and illustrations.
You might want a new house style guide if you don’t already have one, or to incorporate a range of updates and amendments in an existing document.
You may need a mix of these services. They could be required one after another or all in one go because your content needs to be turned round in a hurry.
How much will it cost?
That’s the big question, particularly if you’ve got a limited budget.
My prices are flexible, typically ranging from £25 to £45 an hour. It depends on exactly what you need and the amount of content involved.
